Composer's Biography
Chinese composer Xinyan Li’s works have been performed throughout U.S. such as New York, Aspen, Las Vegas, Chicago, Minneapolis, Ann Arbor, Madison, Kansas City, as well as France, Germany, Norway, and China. Her music has been performed by American Composers Orchestra, Conundrum Woodwind Quintet, Prism Quartet, Bergen Woodwind Quintet, Quintet of Americas, bassoonist Jeffrey Lyman, Quintette K, East Coast Composers Ensemble, Chicago New Music Ensemble, Donald Sinta Saxophone Quartet, East Winds Quintet, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Principal Woodwind Quintet, among others. Xinyan Li has been invited as one of the 12 visiting composers by Aspen Music Festival in 2007, where her woodwind quintet Mo Suo's Burial Ceremony was performed by Mark Sparks, Richard Woodhams, Theodore Oien, John Zirbel, and Per Hannevold in Harris Hall. Her awards and honors include ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Readings, a commission from National Endowment for the Arts and Music From China, Tsang-Houei Hsu International Music Composition Award, Libby Larsen Prize from International Alliance of Women in Music. Her music has been featured at Aspen Music Festival, National Center for the Performing Arts (China), Gamle Logen (Norway), Nevada Encounters of New Music, Septembre musical de l'Orne (France), 5ème concours international de musique de chambre - Lyon (France), Bayer Kulturabteilung Spielzeit 08/09 (Germany) etc. Born in 1978, Xinyan Li is currently a doctoral candidate at University of Missouri-Kansas City where she studies with professors Chen Yi, James Mobberley, Zhou Long and Paul Rudy. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's degree at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing where she studied with professors Jin Xiang and Yang Tongba.
