Composer's Biography
Shalom for Flute and Orchestra by Elliott Bark (b. 1980) has been described by the New York Times as “…abrasive…outbursts…yearning…rapturous surge” after its Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium) premiere in 2010. His music has been performed by many groups and musicians, including the New York Youth Symphony, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Indiana University Orchestra and Saxophone Ensemble, Ensemble Christo, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Zzyzx Saxophone Quartet, Kuttner and Eppes String Quartets, Luna Nova Chamber Ensemble, duo parnas, conductors Kevin Noe, Sydney Hodkinson and Ryan McAdams, flautist Alex Sopp, violinists Liana Gourdgia and Michelle Lie, countertenor Daniel Bubeck and saxophonist Zach Shemon. Recently, musicians from Cleveland Orchestra and French Ensemble Zellig have read his music. Various music festivals presented his music, such as Aspen Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Festival of New Music at Florida State University, Midwest Composers Symposiums at Universities of Indiana (‘07), Iowa (‘08) and Michigan (‘09), North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference, Belvedere Chamber Music Festival, United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, and the 2010 GAMMA at University of Texas in Austin. Elliott, a recipient of Susan and Ford Schumann Fellowship from Aspen Music Festival and School, has received numerous prizes including 2003 Korean Episcopal Church Composition Competition, 2007 Beethoven Club Composition Contest, 2008 Kuttner Quartet Composition Competition, 2009 First place for the SCI/ASCAP student commission in the Region V, 2009 First Music Commission and 2010 Bowdoin International Music Festival Composition Competition. Elliott has recently been commissioned by Porterville Summer Strings, Petar Jankovic Ensemble, Arundo Donax and guitarist Daniel SH Lee. Elliott, a founder and artistic director of Ensemble Christo, has held other artistic positions such as pianist in the Republic of Korea Navy Symphonic Band, music director of many churches, and assistant director of Indiana University New Music Ensemble. As a conductor, Elliott directs not only classical repertoire, but has also premiered more than 50 compositions by living composers. At Indiana University, Elliott pursues a doctoral degree in composition while serving as an Associate Instructor in the composition department. He has studied composition with Claude Baker, David Dzubay, Don Freund and P.Q. Phan and instrumental conducting with David Effron and Arthur Fagen.
